How to read these numbers

Montway publishes average per-mile estimates for 2026 in three distance bands, separately for open and enclosed carriers1. They are averages for standard vehicles, not quotes.

Other companies price differently, and a real quote depends on the route, date and vehicle.

Worked examples from the published rates

TripOpen transportEnclosed transport
300 miles1About $555 (Montway's example)About $759 at $2.53 a mile
1,000 miles1About $910 (Montway's example)About $1,250 at $1.25 a mile
2,000 miles1About $1,180 (Montway's example)About $1,680 at $0.84 a mile

Open figures are Montway's examples. Enclosed figures are our arithmetic from Montway's per-mile rates (distance times rate); Montway's enclosed page gives slightly different rounded examples.

What moves a real quote

  • Distance and route

Longer trips cost less per mile; busy routes and metro pickups are easier to fill than rural ones1.

  • When you book and the season

How far ahead you book and the time of year both show up in the price1.

  • The vehicle

Make, size, modifications, and whether it runs. Clearance under 4 inches needs a lift gate1.

  • Open or enclosed

Enclosed shields the car from weather and debris and costs about 10-40% more per trip2.

Locking the price

Montway describes a TruePrice Guarantee: once an order is booked and confirmed, it says the booked price is the price you pay, covering rate increases during a 30-day protection period1. Read the terms on its page.

Drive it or ship it

  1. Step 1

    Price the drive

Fuel for the distance, nights on the road, meals and days off work.

  2. Step 2

    Price the shipment

Get a written quote for your dates and route; pay for enclosed only if the car needs protection.

  3. Step 3

    Plan the gap

You may be without the car for the transit days; plan how you get around at the new address.
